About Me

Eva Kaján

I’m a professional photographer and a wilderness guide living in Lapland. I specialise in black and white fine art photography and my subjects focus mainly on nature showing landscapes and close-up macros.

I find B&W photography very rewarding. When I go out, I need to convert all the colours of the landscape into shades of grey in my head. Some weather conditions are better than others, as are some seasons. My favourite time of the year is October when everything is naturally black and white. I mostly take photos while skiing, as our long winter lasts almost seven months. During the summer months I hike and paddle to see the most interesting places.

I’ve been taking photos ever since I was ten, but more seriously for the past 15 years. I bought my first digital camera in 2003 and the first SLR in 2007. Before that, it was all films.

I have studied photography and today I also teach it and sell photos to private people and businesses. I additionally do some writing for newspapers and outdoor magazines. I’ve had several solo exhibitions in recent years, thanks to Finnfoto’s grant programme.

I was an invited artist at the Väyläfestival, a cross-border art festival taking place in Finland, Sweden and Norway in 2022 &2023. I also received an artist grant, which allows me to take different kinds of photos. My art project, Don’t be trashy, focuses on sustainable nature-based tourism and was funded by Niilo Helander Foundation. I have a PhD in Arctic tourism and climate change, so the topic is very familiar and dear to me. You can find more about my photography projects on my Project Site.

You’ll find me mostly in the fells with my skis or boots on. Cloudier and gloomier the day, the better.

Naturally.
